Paulie Bignell – Australian Rockin’ Guitar Man

Paulie Bignell es un guitarrista Australiano muy reputado en las escena de música de raíces americana. Empezó a tocar la guitarra en la escuela primaria cuando tenía unos 10 u 11 años, así como también a estudiar música, pero según sus propias palabras: «Querían enseñarme a leer música y tocar Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Eso no era para mí. Quería aprender los riffs de Chuck Berry o Bill Hailey, así que lo dejé. Había estado viendo demasiado Happy Days (Famosísima serie de Tv ambientada en los años 50’s) «. Durante su adolescencia se dedicó a escuchar cualquier cosa que tuviera una guitarra rockin, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, AC / DC, ZZ Top, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Devo. Todos estos grupos, muy pronto, volvieron a hacerle rastrear el pasado, buscando las raíces de la música. El blues y el rock and roll de los 50’s, el country y el RnB. Con 15 años decidió que sería músico, y que la guitarra sería su instrumento.

A principios de la década de los 90’s, acompaña a la guitarra a Rockbottom James en el grupo Rocket 88, donde estará durante 5 años hasta su disolución. Después de esto, Paulie Bignell y James Maloney crean un nuevo grupo, Rockbottom James & The Detonators, posteriormente acortaron su nombre para llamarse The Detonators. Otro día le dedicaremos a The Detonators la atención que se merecen, es una de las mejores bandas en su estilo que han nacido en Australia.

Hasta el momento Paul Bignell, en solitario ha grabado 2 lp’s y un ep, que es un adelanto de su nuevo larga duración para éste 2020. El primero de sus discos en solitario lo grabó junto a Preston Hubbard, el que fuera bajista de la mejor formación de The Fabulous Thunderbirds, anteriormente en Memphis Rockabilly Band y Roomfoul Of Blues. Un tremendo recital de R&B y Rock & Roll, que mezcla estilos magistralmente, versionea el clásico de la música country Truck Drivin’ Man al estilo de The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Este tipo de cosa son las que le gusta hacer a Paulie Bignell, tocar temas country al estilo Blues o Rock & Roll y darles un toque de country a los temas de Blues. No penséis por el comentario anterior que en su repertorio abundan las versiones, es un muy buen compositor con excelentes temas propios, como podréis comprobar en nuestra playlist. Sus compositores favoritos son Hank Williams y Willy Dixon. Entre sus influencias cita a todos los clásicos de la música country, Blues y Rock & Roll de los 40’s y 50’s, además de a los Stones y a los Beatles. Cita como artistas favoritos más actuales a The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmie Vaughn, Junior Watson, Junior Brown, James Harman, Hot Club of Cowtown, Dwight Yoakam, George Thorogood, Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Rod Piazza, Dave Biller. Redd Volkaert, y como héroes de su etapa adolescente a Malcolm y Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen , además de artistas australianos como Red Rivers, Pat Capocci, o Rusty Pinto, a estos dos últimos los ha producido en un disco compartido para Preston Records. Los Trabajos en solitario de Bignell suenan como un cruce entre Buck Owens, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Rockpile y George Thorogood

Ante la pregunta en una entrevista ¿Con quién te gustaría tocar? Bignell contesto:

Tendría a Willy Dixon en el bajo, Louis Prima podría ser el líder y tocar la trompeta, Malcolm Young o Rob Riley en la guitarra rítmica, Otis Span en el piano y Earl Palmer en la batería. Qué banda tan loca … Me encantaría tocar con cualquiera, siempre y cuando sea bueno.

Su ultimo Ep está compuesto por 6 temas, entre ellos una versión del Rock & Roll Outlaw de Rose Tattoo, al estilo de Blues Rock de Bignell con un toque a lo Elmore James. Desde Poison Ivy Lovers os recomendamos a este gran artista que seguro que no os dejará indiferentes.

Paulie Bignell is a very renowned Australian guitar player in the American roots music scene. He started playing guitar in Elementary school when he was about 10 or 11 years old, as well as studying music, but in his own words: «They wanted to teach me to read music and play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. That wasn’t for me. I wanted to learn the riffs of Chuck Berry or Bill Hailey, so I quit it. I had been watching too much Happy Days (Famous Tv series set in the 50’s)». During his teens he dedicated himself to listening to anything that had a rockin guitar, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, AC / DC, ZZ Top, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Devo. Al these bands, very son, made him trace the past again, looking for the roots of music. The blues and rock and roll of the 50’s, the country and the RnB. With 15 years he decided that he would be a musician, and that the guitar would be his instrument.

In the early 90’s, Rockbottom James accompanies the guitar in the Rocket 88 band, where he will be for 5 years until its dissolution. After this, Paulie Bignell and James Maloney created a new band, Rockbottom James & The Detonators, later shortened their name to be called The Detonators. When asked in an interview, who would you like to play with? Bignell answered:

“I would have Willy Dixon on bass, Louis Prima could be the leader and play the trumpet, Malcolm Young or Rob Riley on the rhythm guitar, Otis Span on the piano and Earl Palmer on drums. What a crazy band!!…  I’d love to play with anyone, as long as it’s good”

His latest Ep is composed of 6 tracks, including a version of Rock & Roll Outlaw by Rose Tattoo, in the style of Blues Rock by Bignell with a touch of Elmore James. From Poison Ivy Lovers we recommend this great artist who surely not leave you indifferent.
